Choosing the Colors in Your Quilting Fabric

By Penny Halgren Making a quilt should be a fun and relaxing experience, so you should choose fabrics that you enjoy working with. Keeping that in mind, there are a few tips that can make your quilt interesting and dynamic to look at. 1) Two color quilts have a unique appeal. To be most effective, pick colors that contrast white with blue, red or green work well. White with pink yellow, or lavender are nice, but dont offer as much of a contrast. 2) One way to evaluate colors is to create categories of light, medium, and dark. Be aware that these are relative categories. A fabric that may be considered light compared to others in the fabric store, may be a medium in your quilt. Using a combination of light, medium and dark fabrics in your quilt adds variety and interest. If all of the fabrics have the same value, they will blend together, making your design less distinguishable. This could be the desired effect. Many quilts use color as the design, making the shape of the block less important than the color choices. 3) Pull out the color wheel. The primary colors are blue, yellow and red. All other colors are made by combining primary colors. For example, mixing blue and yellow will make green. Red and yellow make orange; and blue and red make purple. Depending on how much of each of the primary colors is used in the mix, the resulting color will tend more to either of the primary colors. Thus, green will be either yellow-green or blue-green. That is why sometimes greens dont seem to go together. The same is true of orange and purple. Orange will be a red-orange or yellow-orange; while purple will be red-purple or blue-purple. Having a color wheel handy will help you see the difference. Its also interesting to note that colors are also referred to as cool or warm. Cool colors are blue, green, purple; while warm colors are red, orange, yellow. Practice helps. Spend a day in a fabric shop comparing fabrics. To check a green fabric, pick a blue fabric and a yellow fabric. Place the green fabric between the two. You may see that the green looks more like the blue, making it a blue-green a cool color. Or, it may look more like the yellow, making it a yellow-green a somewhat warmer color. Then take a purple fabric and place it between a blue fabric and a red fabric. You may see that the purple looks more like the blue, and feels a little cooler. Or it may be a red-purple and feel a bit warm. When you get home, take a color stack from your stash i.e., line up all of the green fabrics between a yellow piece and a blue piece. Then arrange them in a kind of order from the most yellow to the most blue. Do the same with your purple fabrics. You can follow this up with oranges and other colors. You may also notice that there are different colors of black and grey, and even white. This exercise may take some time, but when you are finished you will understand color better, and be able to pick fabrics that achieve your desired results. Happy Quilting! Blame It On Iodine

By Ron McCluskey If you are seriously trying to lose weight, chances are have tried several different programs. Many of you are still not getting down to your desired or ideal weight. One big reason could be that you are having problems with one little molecule. Iodine is the basis for the extremely important Thyroid Hormone in your body. That hormone regulates everything from your metabolism to your digestion. Because it usually slowly creeps up on you, it is very common to not realize that there has been a change in your energy level, memory, mentrual periods and skin texture. You could even be losing your hair over this one. The lack of enough Thyroid Hormone in your body is called Hypothyroidism. There are several things that Hypothyroidism will cause that make you gain weight. First of all, it decreases your basal metabolic rate and overall metabolism. That is the rate that you use up energy. Basically what that means is that the normal muscle tone is lost and your muscles tend to be much more relaxed than normal. Your internal organs that use muscles will also be affected. You will probably notice that mostly by a change in your bowel habits. You will tend to become constipated. Just what you needed! Muscles need to remain toned to keep your joints in the proper position. So, they will always normally be a little tight. This uses calories (yeah!). Obviously, when they are more relaxed than normal, you tend to gain weight. Secondly, lack of Thyroid Hormone will make you lazy. At least that is my excuse. hehe. Dr. Oliver Sacks (made famous in the movie Awakenings) describes one man that had to be helped out of bed in the morning. He was then fed and led to a chair in the corner. In the evening he was led back to bed. During the day he would not even talk. This happened day after day for years! Finally, for some reason, he ended up at the doctors office and was found to be severely hypothyroid. He returned to normal with treatment, but did not even remember all those years where he was a zombie. If you suspect that you might have hypothyroidism consider these associated symptoms: dry skin, brittle nails, constipation, irregular or heavy menstrual periods (if you are male, you probably won’t develop this one), feeling tired and weak, cold skin, coarse, retaining water or thinning hair. Any, or all of these can occur. You have an increased chance of getting this condition if you have a swelling in the front of your neck called a goiter, diabetes, patches of light skin (not always, but there is a specific condition causing this that also affects the thyroid), iodine deficiency and some medications. Some women develop this as a complication of pregnancy. If you always buy salt with no iodine, there is a slight chance that you could develop hypothyroidism as a result of the lack of iodine. Remember, iodine is part of the thyroid hormone molecule. Without iodine, your body cannot make the hormone. When you think you may have hypothyroidism, you should see your medical doctor to get a blood test. One thing that most doctors won’t tell you is that you need to be otherwise feeling pretty good during the test. There is one condition called Euthyroid Sick Syndrome that will cause low Thyroid Hormone levels when you are sick. But the hormone levels can return to normal when you get well. So, it is better to get the levels checked when you get well in order to have an accurate test. Assuming that you have guessed right, your doctor will prescribe a thyroid hormone supplement that will get you feeling better. The only problem at this point is that it is often tricky to get the right amount into your system. You will often bounce back and forth between feeling weak and tired and feeling jittery. But with your doctors help, that should diminish fairly quickly. The good news is that once your thyroid is in control, you are going to feel much better, have more energy and be back on track with your weight control. What Are The Common Myths About Weight Loss?

Fact: This is yet another common myth among the weight loss crowd. Like any other diet that tells you to cut this or that food from your daily meals, fad diets are not healthy for you. The cornerstone of any diet is supplying the body with all the calories, proteins and minerals it needs. Diets that cut out foods without regard for the needs of your body cannot be healthy for you. Fad diets fail to deliver on the promise of permanent weight loss because people will always crave the forbidden foods and will always end up breaking the rules and ditching the diet. The key to making weight loss permanent is more exercise and to avoid eating food that makes you fat without nourishing your body. Our extensive studies confirmed the importance of exercising and of a well-balanced diet. Myth: Low-fat or no fat food is always a good choice. Fact: The only low fat foods that are also low in calories are fruits. The rest of the huge low-fat or non-fat group are not a safe choice if you are dieting. These products may have added sugar, starch or flour to make them taste better, which means extra calories that do not belong into your diet. Fact: I know this is a hard pill to swallow, but no food plan will work for you unless you take charge of your eating and make sure that everything that goes past your lips is the right kind of food. The key here is to be absolutely sure that the vegetarian diet will give your body all the nutrients and calories it needs. Eating heaps of foods that do nothing for you from the nutritional point of view, outside maybe of filling your stomach, can bring you a lot of trouble in the future. Since plants tend to have a lower concentration of nutrients than meat, you will have to eat more food than before to make up for this difference. Not to mention that a strictly vegetarian diet will not get you enough vitamin B12, vitamin D, iron, calcium and zinc. These substances are taken mostly from dairy products and eggs in a regular diet, but true vegetarians can’t touch those. You’ll have to rely on the few and uncommon vegetables that can provide these substances. Myth: Dairy products cause heart problems and make you fat. Fact: Well, thanks to modern medicine everybody knows that eating a lot of dairy products is a surefire path to high blood pressure and stroke, although a large group of people from France refuse to die despite the large quantities of cheese and wine they consume. Dairy products are the main source of calcium that keeps your bones strong and healthy. It is absolutely essential for children and can be in no way overlooked by adults. Dairy products also contain vitamin D, which is crucial to maintaining the normal levels of calcium and phosphorus in your bloodstream. If you don’t want to gain weight from dairy products, then choose low-fat or non-fat brands. There are enough of those around. If you are lactose-intolerant, drink soya or rice milk. It does not taste exactly the same as true milk, but it’s still good and nutritious. Butter and margarine are the only dairy products you should worry about. They do contain big levels of fat. Still, if you can’t do without them, at least eat butter. Margarine is an over-processed fat that is not particularly good for you. Butter may be a bit fatter, but it definitely is the healthier of these two. NOW is the time! O.K. you have read the article. Now is the time for action. Are You STILL Trying to Lose Weight?

By Rico Caveglia PLEASE READ VERY CAREFULLY! Think about this. The weight loss industry is estimated to now be grossing over 50 billion per year and growing. It is also estimated that 60% of Americans (300 million people) are over weight, which equals 180 million people. That is approximately $300 of weight loss products for each overweight person. What has been the result of these 50 billions dollars worth of products and programs? Are we a nation of slim people? No, quite the contrary, we are a nation of fat people and getting fatter. Obviously these products and programs have only been successful at reducing the consumers bank accounts. So we can easily conclude that these hyped-up, weight loss products and diets do not work! Yet people continue to fall for the next magic bullet and the next wonder diet. A definition of insanity is; is doing the same things over and over, hoping for a different result. Are you ready to stop the insanity? Are you ready to give up on what I call the 4 Ps, pills, powders, packaged food and preposterous promises. If so then read on. Why havent you been successful in losing and keeping the weight off? The very straight forward and honest answer is, there is no magic bullet; there is no basic program that can work for everyone or for anyone. We have just proven that by the fact that for the last 50 years we have been spending more and more while getting fatter and fatter every year. The simple thing you can do immediately to end your struggles with weight loss is… Stop trying! Yes, stop trying! Remember the products and diets dont work. So throw away your scale and never weight yourself again. Forget about your weight. How much you weight has no bearing what so ever on your health. So take a second right now and commit to never weighting yourself again. Now go into your bathroom and pick up your scale and toss it in the trash! Alright, dont you feel better already?
